The Importer Exporter Code (IEC) is a unique 10-digit identification number issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) to Indian businesses and individuals involved in import and export activities. One of the most significant aspects of the IEC is its lifetime validity. Once issued, the IEC remains valid for the entire life of the entity and does not require any renewal, provided that the holder updates the details on the DGFT portal annually.
In 2021, DGFT introduced a new requirement for annual updation of IEC details. Even if there are no changes, the IEC holder must log in to the DGFT portal and confirm or update the information between April and June every year. Failure to do so may lead to the deactivation of the IEC, although it can be reactivated upon completion of the required updation process.
This provision ensures that the DGFT maintains an up-to-date and accurate database of active importers and exporters. Therefore, while the IEC number itself does not expire, maintaining its active status depends on fulfilling the annual updation requirement.
In summary, the IEC certificate is valid for a lifetime but subject to compliance with annual updation norms. Keeping it active is essential for continuing any import-export activities without interruption or penalties.
