Yes, you can apply for an Importer Exporter Code (IEC) online through the official portal of the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) at www.dgft.gov.in. The process is entirely digital and can be completed in a few simple steps, making it convenient for individuals and businesses engaged in import or export activities in India.
To begin with, applicants must register on the DGFT portal by creating a login ID using their PAN, email ID, and mobile number. Once registered, they can log in and navigate to the ‘Apply for IEC’ option under the ‘IEC Profile Management’ section. Before applying, it is important to ensure that you have a valid PAN, a bank account in the entity’s name, and address proof. For signing the application, you can use either a Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) or opt for Aadhaar-based e-sign.
The application requires you to fill in basic details such as the name of the applicant or business, PAN, contact details, and bank information. You must also upload supporting documents like a cancelled cheque or bank certificate and address proof. After completing the form, the application must be digitally signed, and a government fee of ₹500 is to be paid online through UPI, credit/debit card, or net banking.
Once submitted, the IEC is typically issued within 1–2 working days. You will receive an IEC certificate which can be downloaded directly from the DGFT portal. The IEC remains valid for a lifetime unless revoked or surrendered. This online procedure has simplified the process for businesses and individuals, making it faster and more accessible to obtain an IEC in India.
