Yes, you can update your IEC (Import Export Code) even after the due date, but there are important implications to keep in mind. As per the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) guidelines in India, all IEC holders are required to update and validate their IEC details online every year between April and June—even if no changes are made. This ensures that the IEC remains active and compliant.
If you fail to update the IEC within this window, your code does not get cancelled immediately. However, it becomes inactive on the DGFT portal. This can restrict your ability to conduct import-export transactions, as customs and other authorities may reject documentation linked to an inactive IEC. It can also impact your credibility with international partners and banks.
To reactivate your IEC after the due date, you must log in to the DGFT portal, complete the update process, and submit the required declaration. Once this is done, your IEC is usually reactivated promptly without the need to pay a penalty—although this is subject to DGFT’s current policies.
While there is no fine as of now for late updates, repeated delays could attract stricter enforcement in the future. It’s advisable to set yearly reminders or delegate compliance to ensure your IEC remains valid and active throughout the year.
