Yes, updating your IEC (Importer Exporter Code) is mandatory under DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) regulations in India. As per the latest guidelines, all IEC holders must ensure their IEC is updated or confirmed annually, even if there are no changes to the existing details. This rule was introduced to keep the DGFT database current and to avoid non-compliance penalties.
The update window is between April and June of every financial year. You simply need to log in to the DGFT portal and either edit the IEC if changes exist or confirm that the current information is accurate. There is no government fee for this update if it’s done within the stipulated time.
However, failing to update the IEC within the given period leads to deactivation of your IEC, meaning you will not be able to import or export legally until it is reactivated. To reactivate, you must complete the update process and request revalidation on the DGFT portal.
This mandatory update applies to all entities — individuals, proprietorships, partnerships, LLPs, and companies — who hold an IEC. It’s a compliance measure, not a fee-based renewal. Skipping this step can disrupt your business and invite scrutiny during customs clearances.
So, even if you haven’t made any changes to your business details, make sure to log in and confirm the status of your IEC annually, without fail.
