Who is eligible for IEC Code?

Any individual or business entity in India that intends to engage in the import or export of goods or services is eligible to apply for an Importer Exporter Code (IEC). Issued by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), the IEC is a mandatory 10-digit registration number required for cross-border trade. There are no specific educational, financial, or turnover-based eligibility criteria, making it accessible to almost anyone interested in international trade.

Individuals, even without a registered business, can apply using their personal PAN card. This is useful for freelancers or those exporting services such as IT, consulting, or design work. Business entities like proprietorships, partnership firms, LLPs, private limited companies, public limited companies, societies, trusts, and HUFs can all apply using their organizational PAN. Startups and MSMEs venturing into global markets also commonly obtain an IEC at the initial stage of operations.

Importantly, e-commerce sellers exporting through platforms like Amazon, eBay, or Etsy are also required to have an IEC. While GST is not mandatory to get IEC, having it can streamline other compliance requirements.

Applicants must have a valid PAN, a bank account in the name of the individual or business, and address proof. However, minors cannot apply directly unless represented by a legal guardian. In summary, any person or entity with a valid PAN and bank account is eligible for an IEC to begin importing or exporting legally from India.
