Can I extend my IEC?

Can I extend my IEC

No, you cannot technically “extend” your IEC (Import Export Code) in the sense of increasing its validity period, because the IEC issued by the DGFT (Directorate General of Foreign Trade) does not have an expiry date. Once allotted, it remains valid for the lifetime of your business, provided you comply with the annual update requirement.

Earlier, IECs were valid indefinitely without any renewal process, but as per DGFT’s notification, every IEC holder must update or confirm their IEC details online on the DGFT portal once every financial year, between April and June. This is called the IEC Annual Updation process.

If you fail to update your IEC within this period, it will be deactivated by the DGFT. However, it can be easily reactivated by logging into the DGFT portal, updating the necessary details, and submitting the request online.

So, while there is no direct “extension” process, timely annual updation ensures your IEC remains active and usable for all import-export transactions. This updation can also be done even if there are no changes in your IEC details — in that case, you simply confirm that all information is correct.

In short — IEC cannot be extended like a license, but you can keep it valid for life by fulfilling the annual update requirement.
