Clearing a Bluetooth product for India launch with a WPC ETA
How we secured a WPC Equipment Type Approval through Saral Sanchar, and caught the BIS requirement that would have held the launch, for a global gadget brand’s first India consignment.
What a WPC ETA actually is
Any wireless product that uses India’s de-licensed radio bands, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, RFID, NFC and the like, needs an Equipment Type Approval (ETA) from the Wireless Planning and Coordination Wing of the Department of Telecommunications before it can be imported or sold. Wireless headphones sit squarely in that bracket.
The approval is now an online, self-declaration process on the Saral Sanchar portal. That sounds simple, and it can be, but it rests on two things being right: the product’s frequency bands must be correctly identified as de-licensed, and you need a valid RF test report from an accredited lab. Get those right and the ETA is quick. Get them wrong and the consignment sits at customs.
The client and the challenge
Profile: a global tech brand launching a new Bluetooth headphone model in India, with no local team to run the certification.
- ETA before launch. The product could not be imported or sold without a WPC ETA, and the launch date was fixed.
- A valid RF test report. The self-declaration is only as strong as the accredited lab report behind it.
- The hidden second requirement. A Bluetooth audio product usually also needs BIS registration under the CRS scheme, separate from WPC. Miss it and the goods are still non-compliant even with the ETA in hand.

What we check on every wireless approval
- Band classification. De-licensed versus licensed decides whether this is a quick ETA or a heavier licence.
- A valid, accredited RF test report. This is the real bottleneck, not the ETA filing itself.
- Whether BIS CRS also applies. The requirement importers most often miss on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi gear.
- Correct importer and product details. So the ETA on Saral Sanchar matches the consignment exactly.
- Timing against launch and shipping dates. Uncertified wireless imports can be held or penalised, so the approval has to land first.
