To activate IEC code for actual trade, you need more than the code itself. You have your IEC, but you have probably realised it does not let you ship anything yet. The code must be linked on your profile, your bank AD Code registered at your port, and your ICEGATE account set up on the DGFT portal and customs systems. This page explains what activation really means for a new code and the order to do it in, so you go from holding a code to actually clearing your first shipment.
If instead your code was working before and has gone inactive, that is a different situation, see how to reactivate your IEC for bringing a deactivated code back.
When DGFT issues your IEC, the code itself is live, but your business is not yet trade-ready. Customs needs more than the code to clear a shipment. Activation, in the practical sense, is the set of one-time registrations that connect your IEC to the systems that actually move goods: ICEGATE for filing, and your bank AD Code at the port for customs and foreign exchange. Until those are done, you hold a valid code that cannot yet be used to import or export.
Here is the sequence to take a new code live.
This catches almost every first-time exporter. The IEC is your licence to trade, but it is not the whole setup, and that is why you activate IEC code through these extra steps. Think of the code as your registration and ICEGATE plus AD Code as plugging that registration into the customs and banking systems. Skip them and your shipment has nowhere to be filed and no bank link for clearance. Activating in the right order, code, then ICEGATE and AD Code, is what actually makes you operational.
If your question is really about a code that was active and then stopped working, you do not need to activate from scratch, you reactivate it by completing the pending annual update. That is covered on our how to reactivate your IEC guide. And if you have not got the code yet at all, start with how to apply IEC online.
Getting trade-ready means juggling DGFT, ICEGATE, and your bank, and a gap in any one holds up your first shipment. JParks India handles the full setup, from your IEC registration through ICEGATE and AD Code, so your business is trade-ready from day one. Call or WhatsApp +91 9167379073 to get started.
It means completing the one-time registrations that make a newly issued code trade-ready: linking it on ICEGATE and registering your bank AD Code at your port, so customs can actually clear your shipments.
Because the code alone is not enough. You also need ICEGATE registration and AD Code registration at your port before customs will process your shipping bills.
No. Activation is making a new code trade-ready for the first time. Reactivation is bringing a deactivated code back via the annual update. See our reactivate guide for that.
Companies and LLPs usually need a Class 3 DSC for filing on these systems. Proprietors can often use Aadhaar based authentication.
The IEC itself is issued in 1 to 2 working days, and ICEGATE and AD Code registration typically add a few more, so most businesses are trade-ready within about a week.
