The code must be linked on your profile, your bank AD Code registered at your port, and your ICEGATE account set up on the DGFT portal and customs systems. What activating an IEC code actually means.

When DGFT issues your IEC, the code itself is live, but your business is not yet trade-ready. Customs needs more than the code to clear a shipment. Activation, in the practical sense, is the set of one-time registrations that connect your IEC to the systems that actually move goods: ICEGATE for filing, and your bank AD Code at the port for customs and foreign exchange. Until those are done, you hold a valid code that cannot yet be used to import or export.

How to activate IEC code step by step.

Here is the sequence to take a new code live.

1. Confirm your IEC profile is complete. Log in to the DGFT portal and make sure your firm, bank, and branch details are all filled in and correct, since gaps here cause problems downstream.

3. Register your AD Code at your port. Get the AD Code letter from your bank and register it at the customs station where you will trade. This links your bank account to customs. See AD Code registration.

5. File your first shipment. With the code linked, ICEGATE active, and AD Code registered, you are trade-ready and can file your first bill.

Why a new IEC alone is not enough to trade?

This catches almost every first-time exporter. The IEC is your licence to trade, but it is not the whole setup, and that is why you activate IEC code through these extra steps. Think of the code as your registration and ICEGATE plus AD Code as plugging that registration into the customs and banking systems.
