The ICEGATE duty calculator gives importers a fast way to estimate what a shipment will actually cost before it leaves the supplier’s warehouse. It replaces manual duty math with a direct, HS code based lookup.
This guide covers exactly how the calculation logic works, how to use the tool step by step, and the errors that most often throw off the estimate. If you’d rather have a specialist run the numbers for you, our customs clearance team can do it directly.
ICEGATE is the official portal run by India’s Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC) for customs filings and trade services. The ICEGATE duty calculator sits at icegate.gov.in/cdc and needs no login for a basic estimate.
You enter an HS code and a value. The tool applies the current tariff schedule and returns a component-wise breakdown: Basic Customs Duty, Social Welfare Surcharge, IGST, and any applicable cess. It works for both import and export duty lookups, though import calculations are what most users need.
Indian import duty is not one flat percentage. It is a sequence of charges, and each layer changes the base for the next one:
Landed cost is the AV plus every duty component added together. Miss the landing charge step, and your estimate will run slightly under the real figure.
A shipment with a CIF value of ₹1,00,000, BCD at 10%, and IGST at 18%, with no cess:
| Component | Formula | Amount (₹) |
| CIF Value | Cost + Insurance + Freight | 1,00,000 |
| Landing Charge | 1% of CIF | 1,000 |
| Assessable Value (AV) | CIF + Landing Charge | 1,01,000 |
| Basic Customs Duty | 10% of AV | 10,100 |
| Social Welfare Surcharge | 10% of BCD | 1,010 |
| IGST Base | AV + BCD + SWS | 1,12,110 |
| IGST | 18% of IGST base | 20,180 |
| Total Duty | BCD + SWS + IGST | 31,290 |
| Landed Cost | AV + Total Duty | 1,32,290 |

| Error | Why It Happens | Fix |
| Using FOB instead of CIF | Suppliers often quote FOB by default | Add freight and insurance before entering value |
| Wrong HS code | Similar codes have near-identical descriptions | Read the full tariff heading, not just the short label |
| Ignoring the landing charge | Not commonly known outside customs professionals | Add 1% of CIF to get the correct Assessable Value |
| Treating the estimate as final | Calculator gives a planning figure, not a legal assessment | Confirm final duty only at Bill of Entry filing |
| Missing anti-dumping or safeguard duty | Not included in the standard calculator output | Check separately against the relevant CBIC notification |
| Assuming SWS applies to every shipment | Some goods are notified as exempt from SWS | Check the exemption notification for your specific HS code |
The ICEGATE duty calculator turns a multi-step legal calculation into a two-minute lookup, once you know the sequence: Assessable Value, then BCD, then SWS, then IGST, then cess.
Use it early, before you commit to a supplier price, not just before filing. For a shipment you can’t afford to get wrong, JPARKS INDIA‘s customs and compliance team can run the numbers and handle the filing for you – see the full range of services they cover, or book a free consultation to talk through your shipment.
Yes. It requires no registration or login for a basic estimate.
No. It’s a planning estimate. The final assessed duty is confirmed during Bill of Entry filing.
Because the IGST base includes Assessable Value plus BCD plus SWS, by law, not CIF alone.
You get an inaccurate estimate, and if used in an actual filing, it can trigger reassessment or penalties.
Yes, if your goods qualify under an FTA and you hold a valid certificate of origin.
No. Anti-dumping and safeguard duty need to be checked separately against the relevant notification.
For GST-registered businesses, IGST paid at import is generally available as input tax credit.
Through the annual Union Budget, and through standalone CBIC notifications at any point in the year.
IGST applies to nearly all imports as the GST equivalent. Compensation cess applies only to select goods, such as automobiles, tobacco, and aerated drinks, on top of IGST.
No, it’s built for direct use. A broker becomes useful once you’re filing the actual Bill of Entry or dealing with a disputed classification.
